Pittsburgh Squash Association – Board Meeting Minutes

September 15, 2011



  1. In attendance: Tom Arbogast, Pedro Ferreira, Asad Khan, Imran Khan, Duilio Costa, Cliff Early, Alex Reynolds, Steve Baicker-McKee, David Linz, Rob Burton, Matt Greene, Matt McClure, George Sattler, Lafe Metz, Joe Bevevino, Anna Brewer,
  2. Board Elections: The Board nominated and confirmed unanimously the following persons to the Board: Asad Khan, Imran Khan, Cliff Early, Alex Reynolds, Rob Burton, Matt McClure, David Linz and Avery Lovejoy.  Rob Burton was nominated and confirmed as Secretary
    1. Board Members Stepping Down:  The following 2010/2011 season board members have stepped down.  Thank you for your contributions:  Lafe Metz, Beth Fedorowich, Elizabeth McCrackin, Shane Fischbach, Mike Scott
  3. Tom opened the meeting with a brief discussion of the PSQ’s budget for the 2011/2012 season as well as the Association’s current fiscal situation and provided an overview of the events planned throughout the course of the upcoming season.
  4. 2011 City Championships
    1. The Tournament is scheduled for the spring 2012, with the proposed date to be one week before the playoffs for the city A/B league will occur (early – mid February)
    2. Final dates to be determined following the production of the league schedule by Matt Greene
  5. 2011 Buchanan Open (Amateur Tournament)
    1. Dates confirmed for November 18 – 20, 2011
    2. Carlos will pursue sanctioning for the Junior draws and main draws of the tournament
    3. Rob Burton named Tournament Director
    4. The tournament will also have a 6.0 draw which will operate as a Pro-Am event
      1. i.     Limited to 8 amateurs and costing $50
      2. ii.     Pro entries will be open to any pros that lose in the first round of qualifiers
      3. iii.     Matches to begin on Thursday night
    5. Pros who are no longer in the tournament following will be offering group lessons, price TBD, on Wednesday evening
  6. The revamped website is being used successfully to publish league information, record sanctioned match scores, publicize events and collect tournament registrations and payments.
  7. 2011/2012 Team Leagues
    1. Currently expect 9 – 10 teams
    2. The Board voted that Shadyside Academy cannot field an A/B team unless they are able to field a full, competitive team
    3. League play to begin October 3rd
    4. Start time of matches confirmed for Mondays at 6PM
    5. The Board approved a rule change for the leagues which allows up to 1 match per week to be rescheduled as needed
      1. i.     Rescheduled match must be played and entered into the system on or before the following Sunday or the match is ruled a default
      2. ii.     The party requesting a reschedule must contact the opposing team captain or player at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule
      3. iii.     The opposing team captain and player have the sole discretion to agree to reschedule the match or not (rescheduling up to 1 match a week is not a right, but a privilege that must be approved by the opposing team)
  8. Junior Squash in Pittsburgh
    1. David Linz proposed the election of a committee to organize a junior squash league in the city
      1. i.     Matt Greene, Matt McClure, and David Linz were nominated and confirmed
    2. David proposed the development of an urban squash program, similar to CitySquash, SquashBusters, etc. in Pittsburgh
      1. i.     Imran Khan will assist David in the development of this program; potential court sites include University of Pittsburgh courts
    3. Junior clinics to be held 1-2x per month, with volunteer coaches
      1. i.     Timing is TBD
      2. ii.     Steve Baicker-McKee, George Sattler, and Rob Burton offered assistance as coaches or volunteers for any clinics
  9. 2011 Pittsburgh Open
    1. Dates confirmed: Qualifying rounds begin Nov. 22nd
    2. Purse of $25k; currently $15k raised
    3. Housing for players will be provided; the Association is seeking local housing/billeting options for the pros
    4. 6.0 pro/am draw approved as mentioned previously
    5. Clinics with pros who lose in the first round of the qualifiers will be offered on Wednesday, price TBD
    6. Discussed the potential for a qualifying round to be held as an event at another club; the Board agreed the idea had merit, and will pursue this again next year
